Mindful living is gaining popularity among both amateur and professional athletes for its significant impact on performance and well-being. In fact, studies increasingly show that mindfulness benefits elite athletes, with evidence pointing to improvements in both mental and physical performance.  Sports psychologists are considered valuable employees or contractors in elite sports franchises to help improve and promote these practices.  In this post, we’ll cover a brief definition of mindful living as it pertains to athletics, ways to incorporate practices and the benefits of mindfulness.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment. It involves paying attention to  thoughts, feelings, and surroundings without judgment. This mental state can be achieved through various techniques, such as meditation, breathing exercises, reflections, visualization and mindful movement. These techniques rarely come naturally to athletes and competitors who require mental toughness to succeed in their sport.

Why Mindfulness Matters

Mental health struggles are prevalent among athletes, with many facing immense pressure to perform. Being in the right mindset is crucial for competing at the highest level. This is where mindfulness can make a transformative difference. The tide is now changing and these struggles are now discussed more openly.

Mindful Moments At Home

My 18-year-old daughter is about to head to college to play volleyball, fulfilling a dream that required years of sacrifice and training. Throughout her journey, I’ve observed her mindfulness practices—such as leaving positive affirmations on her bathroom mirror and placing Kobe Bryant’s famous “Mamba Mentality” phrase on her wall.  She kept a journal over the years to help her work through mentally tough moments.  These simple yet powerful acts have helped her cultivate the mindset needed to compete and excel as a team leader, facing some of the toughest competition both in our state and nationwide.
